"Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each."
- Plato, the philosopher

Critique other site designs?
I am a bit uncomfortable reviewing someone's site because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The creator of the site has a vision of how the content is to be displayed and who am I to say differently. My opinion is just the way I see it and should be worth what you pay for it...nothing. Every site that I have made looks different, colors, layout, style, etc. to learn new techniques and to fit the need of the site.
I'm sure some people that visit this site have already said YECH! She used PURPLE...I hate purple... But that's ok, because I like purple and it's my design!
I don't believe in squashing creativity. The song lyrics written by Harry Chapin really demonstrate how one person can impact another, in the wrong way! This song/story reminds me of Cat's in the Cradle for its ability to change our perceptions. More than 20 years ago, I was given this poem during counseling education as a reminder to not steer people to your view, but instead allow them to find their own way. I still find it a guiding principle today!
I came across this on a torn sheet of paper in 1978 in Charlestion, SC. It fell out of a second-hand book I purchased. This poem has great meaning to me and I wish I could credit the person that wrote it.
I am I
I am I
do not change me
condemn me
nor put me down.
Accept me
for what I am.
No...You need not agree with me
But accept me
for I am total in being
I have my faults
I have my guilts
But
that is
who I am.
Perfect I will never be
Allow me to be uninhibited
do not pressure me into feeling
what I do not feel
Accept me when I am flying high
as I have accepted you
when you were flying high
Do not put me down
nor make me feel unhappy
about me
I am I
and I like being
what I am
ME.

Have Faith.
Regardless of your particular religion or lack thereof, to live in this world we all need a little faith. It's acceptance, belief without all the hard evidence proving fact. Sometimes we have to take a leap of faith to justify our belief in someone or something, to judge if someone is truthful or dishonest. We can be skeptical, but sometimes we have to have faith in someone, take someone or something at face value until proven differently. The best definition of "faith" I have seen:
"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction
of things not seen"
- Hebrews 11:1 from the Bible
Don't Assume.
To assume is the opposite of having faith. It fills in blanks with your expectations, your concepts, your feelings, not fact.
One way to assume is think you know how to interpret what someone says. What was said was...but what was meant was...
Another way to assume is to gossip. It often is based on a morsel of truth but fills in the details with assumptions that usually apply inappropriate meanings.
Assuming can be very destructive and is wrong far more often than not and as the old saying goes...
"When you assume,
you make an ASS out of U and ME."
